New Zealand
Australia and New Zealand are parties to the Australia New Zealand Closer Economic Relations Trade Agreement and the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement, creating one of the world’s most open and successful free trade agreements. They also share the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code, which aligns most food and labelling laws.
Wine in New Zealand
New Zealand consumers are quality-conscious and brand driven. They tend to be loyal to local white wines but are big consumers of Australian red wines. Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the best performing varieties. Australian red wines are seen as delivering consistent quality at a range of prices.
New Zealanders are drinking red wine in increasing amounts, although consumption of white wines is still greater.
Supermarkets dominate the wine trade accounting for around 60% of total sales . The other major distribution channels include liquor stores, specialist wine retailers, on-premise restaurants and hotels.
Market Requirements
Under the Australia New Zealand Closer Economic Relations Trade Agreement any product that has a 50% or more Australian content can enter New Zealand duty free. Domestically labelled products also meet the legal requirements for export to New Zealand. The New Zealand Food Safety Authority is responsible for administering food regulations. Imports to New Zealand are regulated by the New Zealand Customs Service.
