Europe
Europe includes a number of Australia’s biggest export markets, among them Germany (fifth), Denmark (seventh), The Netherlands (eighth) and Sweden (ninth). In 2005, Australian wine exports to Europe totalled 112 million litres worth $315 million.
Total wine consumption is 14,919 million litres, with per capita consumption varying from 5 to 35 litres depending on individual country. Consumers are relatively open-minded towards innovation and new products and this is providing steady growth for New World wines.
In 1994, Australia and the EU signed the Agreement between Australia and the European Community on Trade in Wine. This was the first wine agreement signed outside Europe and has treaty status. It provides for mutual recognition of winemaking practices, geographical indications and traditional expressions.
