Register of Protected Names

The Register of Protected Names is the means of legally formalising conditions for the use of Geographical Indications (GIs), traditional expressions and names as agreed between Australia and other countries (currently such an agreement exists only with the EU).

Sections of the Register

Section (a)
Contains geographic indications in relation to wines manufactured in Australia and the conditions (if any) applicable to those indications.
 
Section (b)
Contains traditional expressions in relation to wines manufactured in Australia and the conditions (if any) applicable to those expressions.
 
Section (c) 
Contains geographical indications in relation to wines manufactured in an agreement country and the conditions (if any) applicable to those indications.
 
Section (d) 
Contains traditional expressions in relation to wines manufactured in an agreement country and the conditions (if any) applicable to those expressions.
 
Section (e) 
Contains words or expressions other than GIs or traditional expressions in relation to wines manufactured in an agreement country and the conditions (if any) applicable to those expressions.
 
Section (f)
Contains the names of varieties of grapes for use in the manufacture of wines in Australia and the conditions (if any) applicable to the description and presentation of wines manufactured in Australia from grapes of those varieties.
 
Section (g)
Contains geographical indications in relation to wines manufactured in foreign countries that are not agreement countries and the conditions (if any) applicable to these indications.
 
Section (h)
Contains traditional expressions in relation to wines manufactured in foreign countries that are not agreement countries and the conditions (if any) applicable to those traditional expressions.
