The World’s 50 Best Restaurants

The World’s 50 Best Restaurants have partnered with Tourism Australia to bring the renowned event to Australian shores, where world-leading chefs, restaurateurs, media and influencers will gather to celebrate the very best in global gastronomy. The overall event program and awards will showcase Australia’s outstanding food and wine culture to an international audience of industry professionals and food lovers.

The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards are being held at The Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne on 5 April 2017.  A week-long period of activity will take place around the Awards from 1-8 April 2017.

Wine Australia is the Official Wine Partner of World’s 50 Best Restaurants sponsoring all the table wines (non-sparkling) for all of the official events in the program.

Wine Australia will invite some of the world’s best sommeliers to Australia, including sommeliers from The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, the Best Sommelier in the World competition and top sommeliers in New Zealand and Australia.

This will be the first time we have so many of the world’s best and most influential sommeliers in the country at the same time. We look forward to immersing them in our dynamic wine culture and hope they walk away with a refreshed perspective and love of Australian wine.

The sommeliers will participate in a dedicated program designed by Wine Australia and experience all that the culinary capital of Melbourne has to offer during the awards, which coincides with the 25th Anniversary of Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. The trip will also include a visit to some of Australia’s acclaimed wine regions to discover more about Australian wine and meet the winemakers.

The World’s 50 Best Restaurants program will run from 1–8 April 2017.

Wine Australia is partnering with The World’s 50 Best Restaurants to showcase Australia’s diverse, interesting and exciting wines to this discerning audience. The World’s 50 Best Restaurants program is attended by more than 190 premium media outlets from over 40 countries and the most influential food and wine people in the world.

Wine Australia hopes to changes the perception of Australian wine internationally and will therefore highlight artisanal and diverse fine Australian wines and focus messaging on the authentic craftsmanship of our winemakers. The campaign aligns with Wine Australia’s strategy to promote premium Australian wine.

How is Wine Australia choosing the wines that will be served at the events?

The wines served throughout the program will be selected by an advisory panel of renowned Australian food and wine experts and influencers in the sector. The panel will take into consideration the style of each event as well as the chef’s menu being served to ensure that we showcase the very best wines for each occasion.

Wine Australia will work with the panel to make sure that the wines chosen represent the diverse range of Australian wines from different sized wineries across the regions and states.

When will we find out what wines are being chosen?

Wine Australia is working closely with The World’s 50 Best Restaurants to ensure all wines match the style and food at each event. The list of wines that will be poured at the events will be finalised in late March.

How have the sommeliers been selected??
A

Wine Australia has selected sommeliers that are from of our key export markets – China, US, Canada, UK, Europe and APAC. Selection criteria included being part of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants or holding a ranking in the Best Sommelier in the World competition. We have also consulted and taken recommendations from the Court of Master Sommeliers in Australia and New Zealand, our in-market teams and the members of our World’s 50 Best Restaurants panel.

What will the sommeliers be doing in Australia?
A

The international sommeliers will fly into Sydney and then to Melbourne where The World’s 50 Best Restaurant Awards are being held. The sommeliers will attend the World’s 50 Best Restaurant Awards on Wednesday 6th of April. Following The World’s 50 Best Restaurants official program, the sommeliers will fly in small groups to other Australian wine regions in South Australia, Tasmania, Western Australia, Canberra and New South Wales.

Wine Australia has developed an itinerary to communicate a strong sense of Australia’s wine culture, our history and evolution as well as the people and stories that make our country unique. The sommeliers will participate in various activities, tastings and masterclasses organised by Wine Australia and will do regional visits to Victorian wine regions, while based in Melbourne.

All wine presented at these events has been curated by the panel depending on the theme and location of the event (e.g. New South Wales wines will be represented in Sydney) and have also been influenced by the sommeliers requests and interests

What regions will be represented in the sommeliers visit?
A

Wine Australia will ensure that a vast range of regions from across Australia are represented across the entire program of events. The sommeliers have been given the opportunity to choose the regions they visit and where possible, surrounding regions will be represented at events within the trip.

During the group’s stay in Melbourne, the sommeliers will have the chance to do day trips in Victoria and taste wines from Mornington Peninsula, Yarra Valley, Geelong and Macedon Ranges.

Small groups of approx. 10 sommeliers will go to one other state in Australia after the World’s 50 Best Restaurant Awards. These trips include:

  • NSW & ACT – from Canberra to the Coast
  • Tasmania – from Coal River to the Tamar Valley
  • South Australia – from McLaren Vale to the Barossa, including Adelaide Hills  

Western Australia – Margaret River, including wines from Great Southern

How have you developed the itinerary?
A

Wine Australia partners with state and regional associations, tourism and trade organisations to develop tailored itineraries that are achievable in the visitor’s time available and deliver a truly memorable experience.

Wine Australia is working with the sommeliers to identify their interests in regions, varieties, wine styles as well as education requirements and brands of interest. We have developed the itineraries in consultation with the sommeliers, the states, regions and our panel members to ensure we are showcasing a diverse range of Australian wine.

Is there an opportunity to submit wine??
A

Wine Australia is asking all regional associations across Australia to nominate three bottles of wine to represent their region. These nominations will be presented to the panel members for consideration and the final selection will be presented to the sommeliers during the program and may be offered on a Wall of Wine in a dedicated ‘somm space’ for the visitors. Wine Australia recommends each region put forward their most exciting wines that represent regionality and will appeal to the best sommeliers in the world.

How do I have a presence in Melbourne during the time??
A

Wine Australia recommend that wineries use their distribution and partner networks in Melbourne to ensure that the best of Australian wine is being promoted across all channels – on and off trade – while the world’s most influential food and wine people are exploring Melbourne. Melbourne Food and Wine Festival will also be taking place during the program and this renowned event will showcase a very diverse range of Australian wine.

What is Somms of the World??
A

Wine Australia has invited approximately 50 influential sommeliers from our key markets to visit Australia during The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards, being held in Melbourne (1-6 April). These sommeliers have been chosen from the restaurants in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, the Best Sommelier in the World competition and top sommeliers in New Zealand and Australia. Wine Australia has named this visit, Somms of the World.

Wine Australia is hosting this trip to help change the perception of Australian wine. We are confident that the sommeliers who visit Australia will become advocates of Australian wine once they have experienced the people and place that makes our wine unique. The ultimate goal is to see more Australian wine represented on wine lists across the world.

Who is attending?

We will have the confirmed list of visitors in mid-March, however some confirmed guests include Joo Lee, Sommelier form Eleven Madison Park in New York (ranked number three in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2016), Seamus Williams-Sharkey, Head Sommelier at the Ledbury in London (ranked number 14 in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2016), Vladimir Kojic, Head Sommelier, Gaggan in Bangkok, (ranked number one in The 50 Best Restaurants Asia 2017 and 23 in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2016).

The Somms of the World visit will run from 31 March – 10 April 2017.

How do we submit wine?
A

All nominations for wine will need to be received from the regional wine association by 8th March 2017. Please contact your local regional association for further details. The panel will then review the nominations and Wine Australia will contact the regions about the wines they require on 10th March. All wines will need to be received in Melbourne by Wine Australia on 17th March 2017.

Can I pay to have my wine featured in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants program??
A

In order to remain fair there is no opportunity to pay for your wines to be featured in the official World’s 50 Best Restaurants program. The panel of Australian wine experts are recommending the wines that will be featured and Wine Australia is working with the nominated wine regions to develop the visit itineraries.
