The Australian Geographical Indication "Big Rivers" was entered in the Register of Protected Names on 1 May 1996 in response to a direction received by the Registrar from the Presiding Member of the Geographical Indications Committee acting under Section 40Z of the WAC Act 1980.

GI area boundaries:

(a) New South Wales 1: 1 500 000 Lamberts conical conformal projections with standard parallels 30° and 36° S.

GI textual description:

The Geographical Indication "Big Rivers" is located within the State of New South Wales, Australia.

The beginning point of the boundary is located at the intersection of the Barrier Highway and the New South Wales/South Australia border at a point adjacent to the township of Cockburn, South Australia and thence running generally eastward along this highway to its intersection with the western boundary of the City of Broken Hill and thence in a generally north direction along the western boundary of the City of Broken Hill to its intersection with the northern boundary of the City of Broken Hill, and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the City of Broken Hill to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the City of Broken Hill, and thence generally south to its intersection with the highway identified as the Barrier Highway "32". and thence in a generally north east direction to the township of Wilcannia, and thence generally south east along the highway identified as the Barrier Highway "32" to its intersection with the highway identified as the Cobb Highway, and thence along this highway to its intersection with the Indian Pacific Railway line adjacent to the township of Ivanhoe, and thence in a generally east direction along the Indian Pacific Railway line passing through the townships of Conoble, Trida, Roto, Matakana, Eubalong West, and Condobolin to the intersection of this railway line with the eastern boundary of the Council of Lachlan, and thence generally west, south then east along the eastern boundary of the Council of Lachlan until the point of its intersection with the Lachlan River, thence follows the Lachlan River in a generally easterly direction until it meets the Newell Highway and thence south along the Newell Highway until it meets the road joining the Newell Highway and Garema and thence generally south along this road to Garema picking up the Parkes - Cootamundra Railway line, and thence running generally southward along this railway line through the towns of Warrinya, Pullabooka, Caragabal, Quandiella to the intersection of this railway line with the southern boundary of the Council of Weddin at a point adjacent to the town of Bribbaree, thence westward along the southern boundary of the Council of Weddin to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Council of Bland, and thence generally south west along the south eastern boundary of the Council of Bland to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Council of Temora, and thence generally south east along the eastern boundary of the Council of Temora to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Council of Cootamundra, and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the Council of Cootamundra, and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Council of Cootamundra, and thence generally west along the southern boundary of the Council of Cootamundra to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Council of Junee, and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Council of Junee to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the City Council of Wagga Wagga, and thence generally south east along the eastern boundary of the City Council of Wagga Wagga to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Council of Holbrook, and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Council of Holbrook, to its intersection with the Murray River to the west of the town of Jinjelic, and thence in a generally western direction along the Victoria/New South Wales border as formed by the Murray River to Moama, and thence in a north-westerly direction along the Victoria/New South Wales border as formed by the Murray River, to its intersection with the South Australia/New South Wales border, and thence generally north along the South Australia/New South Wales border to the beginning point.

The area so enclosed includes all of the City Council of Albury, Council of Cootamundra, Council of Balranald, Council of Berrigan, Council of Bland, City Council of Broken Hill, Council of Conargo, Council of Coolamon, Council of Corowa, Council of Culcairn, Council of Deniliquin, City Council of Griffith, Council of Hay, Council of Holbrook, Council of Hume, Council of Jerilderie, Council of Junee, Council of Lockhart, Council of Leeton, Council of Murray, Council of Murrumbidgee, Council of Narrandera, Council of Temora, Council of Urana, City Council of Wagga Wagga, Council of Wakool, Council of Wentworth, Council of Windouran, and those parts of the Council of Carrathool and the Council of Lachlan, and those parts of the Unincorporated Area, the Council of Central Darling lying to the south of the border as defined by the Indian Pacific Railway and the Barrier Highway and the Cobb Highway, and those parts of the and the Council of Cobar lying to the south of the border as defined by the Indian Pacific Railway, and those parts of the Council of Forbes and the Council of Weddin lying to the south of the Lachlan River and to the west of the boundary described by the Newell Highway and the north-south Parkes-Cootamundra railway line.
