The Australian Geographical Indication "Gippsland" was entered in the Register of Protected Names on 1 May 1996 in response to a direction received by the Registrar from the Presiding Member of the Geographical Indications Committee acting under Section 40Z of the WAC Act 1980.

GI textual description:

The Geographical Indication "Gippsland" is located within the State of Victoria, Australia.

The beginning point of the boundary is located at the intersection of the northern boundary of the Shire of Bass with the eastern shoreline of Western Port Bay, thence generally south-west along this shoreline to the southern coastal border of the State of Victoria as defined by Bass Strait and thence generally east and thence south east and thence north-east along this coastline forming the southern boundaries of the Shire of Bass, the Borough of Wonthaggi, the Shire of Woorayl, the Shire of South Gippsland, the Shire of Alberton, the Shire of Rosedale, the Shire of Tambo, and the Shire of Orbost to its intersection with the New South Wales / Victoria border at Cape Howe, and thence generally north-west along this State border forming the northern boundary of the Shire of Orbost to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Shire of Tambo, and thence generally north west along the northern boundary of the Shire of Tambo to its intersection with the north-eastern boundary of the Shire of Omeo, and thence generally west along the north boundary of the Shire of Omeo, and thence generally south along the western boundary of the Shire of Omeo to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Shire of Avon, and thence generally west along the northern boundary of the Shire of Avon to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Shire of Maffra, and thence generally north-west and thence generally south-west along the north-west boundary of the Shire of Maffra to its intersection with north boundary of the Shire of Narracan, and thence generally west and thence generally south and thence generally west along the northern boundary of the Shire of Narracan to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Shire of Buln Buln and thence generally west and thence generally south along the western boundary of the Shire of Buln Buln to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Shire of Korumburra, and thence generally west and thence south along the north-west boundary of the Shire of Korumburra to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Shire of Bass and thence generally west to the beginning point on the eastern shoreline of Westernport Bay.

All of the island identified as Phillip Island lying at the mouth of Westernport Bay is included in the Gippsland Zone.The area so enclosed includes all of the Shire of Alberton, the Shire of Avon, the Shire of Bairnsdale, the Shire of Bass, the Shire of Buln Buln, the Shire of Korumburra, the Shire of Omeo, the Shire of Orbost, the Shire of South Gippsland, the Shire of Tambo, the Shire of Traralgon, the Shire of Rosedale, the Shire of Maffra, the Shire of Mirboo, the Shire of Narracan, the Shire of Woorayl, and the Borough of Wonthaggi and the Rural City of Warragul.

The area so described also includes the City of Bairnsdale, the City of Moe, the City of Morwell, the City of Sale, the City of Traralgon and the Yallourn works area.
