The Australian Geographical Indication "The Peninsulas" was entered in the Register of Protected Names on 27 December 1996 in response to a direction received by the Registrar from the Presiding Member of the Geographical Indications Committee acting under Section 40Z of the WAC Act 1980.

GI textual description:

The Geographical Indication "The Peninsulas" is located within the State of South Australia, Australia.

The beginning point of the boundary is located at the intersection of the coastline of Venus Bay (which is in turn located centrally on the west coast of the Eyre Peninsula) with the north boundary of the District Council of Elliston, and proceeds thence generally east, thence generally south, and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the District Council of Elliston to its intersection with the northern boundary of the District Council of Cleve, and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the District Council of Cleve to its intersection with the northern boundary of the District Council of Franklin Harbor, and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the District Council of Franklin Harbor to its intersection with the coastline of Spencer Gulf to the north of Plank Point, and thence generally north north east following the western coastline of Spencer Gulf to its northernmost point, and thence in a generally south direction along the eastern coastline of Spencer Gulf to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Hundred of Wandearah (located between Jarrold Point and Wood Point), and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the Hundred of Wandearah to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Hundred of Crystal Brook, and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the Hundred of Crystal Brook to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Hundred of Crystal Brook, and thence in a generally south direction along the east boundary of the Hundred of Crystal Brook to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Hundred of Red Hill, and thence in a generally south direction along the eastern boundary of the Hundred of Red Hill to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Hundred of Barunga, and thence in a generally south direction along the eastern boundary of the Hundred of Barunga to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Hundred of Cameron, and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Hundred of Cameron to its intersection with the southern boundary of the Hundred of Cameron, and thence generally west along the southern boundary of the Hundred of Cameron to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Hundred of Kulpara, and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Hundred of Kulpara to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Hundred of Clinton, and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Hundred of Clinton to its intersection with the coastline of the Gulf St. Vincent adjacent to the township of Port Wakefield, and thence in a generally west and thence south west direction following the coastline of the Gulf St. Vincent which defines the eastern boundary of the Yorke Peninsula, and thence in a generally west direction along the coastline of the Investigator Strait which defines the southern boundary of the Yorke Peninsula to the feature identified as West Cape, and thence in a straight line joining West Cape and the feature identified on the southern coast of the Eyre Peninsula as West Point, and thence generally north west following the southern and then western coastline of Eyre Peninsula (as formed by the Southern Ocean and later by the Great Australian Bight) returning to the beginning point.

The area so enclosed includes all of the District Council of Bute, the District Council of Central Yorke Peninsula, the District Council of Cleve, the District Council of Elliston, the District Council of Franklin Harbor, the District Council of Lower Eyre Peninsula, the District Council of Minlaton, the District Council of Northern Yorke Peninsula, the District Council of Port Broughton, the District Council of Tumby Bay, the District Council of Warooka, the District Council of Yorketown, that part of the District Council of Wakefield Plains lying to the west of the described boundary, that part of the District Council of Blyth - Snowtown lying to the west of the described boundary, those parts of the District Council of Crystal Brook - Redhill lying to the west of the described boundary, those parts of the District Council of Pirie lying to the south of the described boundary, the City of Port Lincoln, the Corporate Town of Wallaroo, and all of the adjoining islands including Althorpe Island, the Sir Joseph Banks Group, Thistle Island, Gambier Islands, Neptune Islands, Wardang Island, Whidbey Islands, and the Investigator Group.
