The global wine market
World wine production has averaged around 27 billion litres between 2012 and 2016. The top three producers, Italy, France and Spain, make up 50 per cent of the total, with the USA accounting for 9 per cent and the main southern hemisphere producers, Argentina, Australia and Chile, making up 15 per cent.
Mainland China’s vineyard area has more than doubled between 2006 and 2016, and China now has the second largest vineyard area in the world after Spain and ahead of France and Italy. While most of that area is currently used for tablegrapes, the production of wine is increasing rapidly.
World wine consumption is estimated to be around 24 billion litres per annum and is gradually increasing with population growth and increases in disposable income, particularly in Asia. The top three wine consuming countries are the USA, China and France, while Portugal, Italy and France have the highest per capita consumption at over 35 litres per person per year, compared with 23.9 for Australia, 9.9 for the USA and just 3.5 for China. The biggest importers of wine are Germany, the USA and the United Kingdom, where production is much lower than consumption. Australia only imports about 16 per cent of its total wine consumption.
