Australian wine industry life cycle assessment update

Summary

Objective

The purpose of this project is to perform an update of the carbon life cycle of Australian wine. The update will include the revision of data used to undertake the previous assessment in 2016, drawing on additional as well as newly updated global and Australia-specific LCA data and data tools. The updated LCA will conform to current best practice and ISO standards and augment the Emissions Reduction Roadmap currently being developed.

Background

Life cycle analysis (LCA) is a cradle-to-grave method for assessing the environmental impacts associated with all the stages of the life cycle of a commercial product or process. LCA data allows identification of areas where gains can be made in emissions reduction and provides science-based data for sustainability communications and demonstration of ESG credentials.

It also allows comparison to other agricultural industries and grape and wine sectors overseas The Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) performed a carbon life cycle of Australian wine in 2016, which requires updating in line with current methodology and standards, and to take advantage of additional data collected through the sector’s sustainability program, Sustainable Winegrowing Australia.

Research approach

The AWRI will conduct an assessment of carbon emissions contributed by the Australian wine sector.

Activities to be undertaken as part of the update include:

  1. Review of the 2016 LCA model, outputs and data sources
  2. Data collection, clean-up, processing and aggregation
  3. Gap analysis to identify strategy for Stakeholder engagement and additional data collection
  4. Stakeholder engagement to assess recent changes to potential environmental impacts of grape growing and winemaking activities in the Australian wine sector
  5. LCA model development, based on the framework of the 2016 LCA model, applying required granular details highlighted through review and stakeholder engagement
  6. Comparison to the 2016 study to show if, and how, the dial has shifted.

A manuscript for publication in the Wine and Viticulture Journal (or similar) will be prepared as an addition to a full technical report.

Sector benefits

Sustainability metrics are becoming increasingly important for all stakeholders across the wine supply chain. The LCA, together with the Emissions Reduction Roadmap, will provide an indication of the carbon footprint of the Australian wine sector as a whole. It will assist stakeholders in the supply chain to address and meet their emissions contributions under differing reporting standards, in both domestic and international markets, and for national emissions inventories.
