The Australian Geographical Indication "Central Ranges" was entered in the Register of Protected Names on 1 May 1996 in response to a direction received by the Registrar from the Presiding Member of the Geographical Indications Committee acting under Section 40Z of the WAC Act 1980.

GI textual description:

The Geographical Indication "Central Ranges" is located within the State of New South Wales, Australia.

The beginning point of the boundary is located on the eastern boundary of the Council of Dubbo, at the point where it meets the north west corner of the Council of Wellington and thence proceeds generally east along the northern boundary and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Council of Wellington to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Council of Mudgee thence generally east, north and east along the northern boundary of the Council of Mudgee to its intersection with the western boundary of the Council of Rylston and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the Council of Rylston and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Council of Rylston to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the City Council of Greater Lithgow and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the City Council of Greater Lithgow to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Council of Oberon and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Council of Oberon and thence generally west along the southern boundary of the Council of Oberon to its intersection with the southern boundary of the Council of Evans and thence generally west along the southern boundary of the Council of Evans to its intersection with the southern boundary of the Council of Cowra and thence generally west along the southern boundary of the Council of Cowra to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Council of Weddin and thence generally south along the eastern boundary and generally west along the southern boundary of the Council of Weddin to its intersection with the Parkes-Cootamundra Railway Line adjacent to the town of Bribbaree and thence generally north along the Parkes-Cootamundra Railway Line to the town of Garema and thence joining the road connecting Garema to Forbes and running north along this road from Garema to its intersection with National Highway "39" (the Newell Highway) and thence generally north east along National Highway "39" through the town of Forbes to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Council of Forbes and thence generally east along this northern boundary of the Council of Forbes to its intersection with the western boundary of the Council of Cabonne and thence generally north along the western boundary of the Council of Cabonne and thence east along the northern boundary of the Council of Cabonne to its intersection with the western boundary of the Council of Wellington and thence generally north east along the western boundary of the Council of Wellington to its north west corner where it intersects with the eastern boundary of the Council of Dubbo which is the beginning point.

The area so enclosed includes all of the City Council of Bathurst, the Council of Cabonne, the Council of Cowra, the Council of Blayney, the Council of Evans, the Council of Oberon, the City Council of Greater Lithgow, the City Council of Orange, the Council of Rylston, the Council of Mudgee, the Council of Wellington, and those parts of the Council of Forbes lying to the east of the Highway "39" and to the east of the road joining the towns of Forbes and Garema and to the east of the north-south Parkes - Cootamundra railway line between Garema where it intersects the northern boundary of the Council of Weddin and those parts of the Council of Weddin lying to the east of the north-south Parkes - Cootamundra railway line.
