I-GRO Diversification Guide for inland winegrape growers and service providers

Murray Valley Winegrowers_Wilga Rd Red Cliffs

The Inland Grower Revenue Options (I-GRO) Diversification Guide is designed to support winegrape growers in the Murray Valley, Riverina and Riverland and their advisers to explore new revenue opportunities and plan for the future of their farm business.

It comprises two practical resources:

  • The I-GRO Discussion Tool, tailored for service providers to guide structured, informed conversations with growers
  • The I-GRO Grower Workbook, a hands-on resource for winegrape growers to work through diversification options and planning activities with their service providers

Together, these resources provide a suite of tools, templates, prompts and checklists to help growers and service providers:

  • Identify a grower’s personal future aspirations
  • Analyse their current farm business
  • Identify and analyse future revenue options for improved farm viability
  • Choose a preferred option
  • Develop a Farm Diversification Plan to test the preferred option, and potentially access finance
  • Map how to transition the farm from its current state to its future state.

The guide was developed in response to the increasing economic and environmental pressures facing Australia's inland winegrape regions (the Murray Valley, Riverina and Riverland) — including an oversupply of red wine, shifts in wine market trends, global supply chain disruptions, constrained water supply and climate change — to provide practical support for growers looking to adapt and build resilience.

Important: How to use the I-GRO Diversification Guide

The I-GRO Diversification Guide was developed for trusted service providers to lead discussions with their inland winegrape grower clients on their diversification options.

Inland winegrape growers will get the best outcome by completing the I-GRO Grower Workbook with a service provider who uses the I-GRO Discussion Tool to support the activities.

Decisions to diversify a farm business need to be made carefully and over time. It is likely that service providers and winegrape growers will have ongoing discussions and use the I-GRO Diversification Guide over 4-6 months to identify and plan their diversification strategy.

For service providers: I-GRO Discussion Tool

The I-GRO Discussion Tool is for service providers as they work with their winegrape grower clients to identify, analyse and inform decisions about diversifying their farm businesses.

Service providers include rural financial counsellors, industry development officers, accountants, extension officers, agronomists, rural bankers and more.

For growers: I-GRO Grower Workbook

The accompanying I-GRO Grower Workbook is for inland winegrape growers to complete with the support of their service provider.

The Workbook contains modules, checklists and templates to develop a Farm Diversification Plan for winegrape growers.

The I-GRO Diversification Guide was funded by the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry in response to the recommendations of the Viticulture and Wine Sector Working Group.

The materials were developed by RM Consulting Group (RMCG) based on consultation with inland region winegrowing industry associations, winegrape growers, service providers and other stakeholders.
