Shiraz was one of the original varieties brought to Australia and is certainly one of the most successful. There are still many vineyards scattered throughout the country with vines that are over 100 years old. It is grown in virtually every region in Australia and produces varying styles from cooler climate, medium-bodied and spicy styles through to more full-bodied, richly flavored and textured warmer climate versions. There are many fantastic regions for Shiraz but the most historic area with a large repository of old vines is the Barossa Valley. Other well established regions for Shiraz in South Australia include McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, Eden Valley. The cooler climate areas of Victoria such as Grampians, Heathcote, Yarra Valley and Nagambie Lakes produce varying styles but tend toward savory and medium-bodied. In New South Wales the cooler climate of Canberra District produces a restrained and aromatic style and The Hunter Valley is known for distinctive medium-bodied, savory and age-worthy wines.
