Master classes

Two master classes will be held throughout of the day. The master classes give the Japanese trade and media the opportunity to meet Australia’s most prominent wineries, taste their wines and hear their stories.

Master class 1: Old School, New School, Good School: A Masterclass on Australian wine

Time: 10:30AM to 12:30PM

This masterclass will reference old school winemaking and how the ‘new school’ of Australian wine is taking a lesson from classic Australian wine styles and winemaking approaches. How history repeats itself... Understanding the old school reveals intricate approaches in the new school. Australia’s lo-fi wine culture starts at the beginning of Australian wine history.

Presented by Mike Bennie, Wine Writer & Journalist

Master class 2: Linking the AWRI’s wine flavour research with regionality

Time: 2:00PM to 4:00PM

This interactive session introduces the latest research on key flavour mixtures in red and white wine and their variation across Australian regions. Participants will have the opportunity to test their palette and preference with a range of different aromatic compounds that naturally occur in Australian wine.

Presented by Con Simos, AWRI

Time: 12:00pm - 5:30pm
Presented by: Wine Australia

In April this year, Wine Australia hosted 50 sommeliers in the country to coincide with The World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards.  Each bottle of wine presented today has been put forward by a sommelier on the Somms of the World trip.
