The Australian Geographical Indication "Port Phillip" was entered in the Register of Protected Names on 1 May 1996 in response to a direction received by the Registrar from the Presiding Member of the Geographical Indications Committee acting under Section 40Z of the WAC Act 1980.

The Geographical Indication "Port Phillip" is located within the State of Victoria, Australia.

The beginning point of the boundary is located on the southern coastline of the State of Victoria (as defined by the Southern Ocean) forming the southern boundary of the Shire of Otway and its intersection with a point located due south of the intersection of the Great Ocean Road and the road commencing to the south-west of Skenes Creek (approx. six kilometres to the north-east of the township of Apollo Bay) which leads generally north through the towns of Tanybryn, Barramunga, Forrest and Barwon Downs to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Shire of Otway, and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the Shire of Otway to its intersection with the western boundary of the Shire of Winchelsea, and thence generally north along this boundary to its intersection with the southern boundary of the Shire of Leigh, and thence generally west, then north and then west again to the westerly boundary of the Shire of Leigh, and thence generally north to the northern boundary of the Shire of Leigh and thence generally east along this boundary to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Shire of Bannockburn, and thence in a generally east direction along the northern boundary of the Shire of Bannockburn to its intersection with western boundary of the Parish of Meridith ("GEELONG VINE DISEASE DISTRICT" as described and proclaimed on Page 57 of the Victorian Government Gazette Number 3, dated 12th January,1881) and thence generally north and east along this boundary (contained within the Shire of Buninyong) to its intersection with the western boundary of the Shire of Ballan and thence generally north along the western boundary of the Shire of Ballan to its intersection with the western boundary of the Shire of Daylesford and Glenlyon, and thence generally north along the western boundary of the Shire of Daylesford and Glenlyon to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Shire of Daylesford and Glenlyon, and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the Shire of Daylesford and Glenlyon to its intersection with the western boundary of the Shire of Kyneton, and thence generally north to the northern boundary of the Shire of Kyneton and east, north, east and then south along the northern boundary of the Shire of Kyneton to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Shire of Romsey, and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the Shire of Romsey to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Shire of Kilmore, and thence generally east and then south east along the northern boundary of the Shire of Kilmore to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Shire of Whittlesea, and thence generally south-east along the northern boundary of the Shire of Whittlesea to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Shire of Eltham and thence generally south-east along this boundary to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Shire of Healesville and thence generally east and then south-east to the intersection of this boundary with the north-western boundary of the Shire of Upper Yarra, and thence generally north east and thence east along the northern boundary of the Shire of Upper Yarra to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Shire of Upper Yarra and thence generally south along this boundary to the southern boundary of the Shire of Upper Yarra and thence generally west and then south-west along the southern boundary of the Shire of Upper Yarra to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Shire of Packenham, and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Shire of Packenham to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Shire of Cranbourne, and thence generally south and thence south west along the eastern boundary of the Shire of Cranbourne to its intersection with the southern boundary of the Shire of Cranbourne and thence generally west along the southern boundary of the Shire of Cranbourne to its intersection with the shore of Western Port Bay, thence along the shore forming the southern boundary of the Shire of Cranbourne to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Shire of Hastings, and thence generally south west to its intersection with the southern boundary of the Shire of Flinders, and thence generally south and thence north west along the eastern and thence southern boundaries of the Shire of Flinders through to Point Nepean, and thence anti-clockwise around the entire shoreline of Port Phillip Bay to Point Lonsdale, and thence following the shoreline in a generally west direction along the southern boundary of the Shire of Bellarine to its intersection with the southern boundary of the City of South Barwon, and thence generally south-west along the southern boundary of the City of South Barwon to its intersection with the southern boundary of the Shire of Barrabool, and thence generally south-west along the southern boundary of the Shire of Barrabool to its intersection with the south-eastern boundary of the Shire of Winchelsea, and thence generally south west along the south-eastern boundary of the Shire of Winchelsea to its intersection with the south east boundary of the Shire of Otway, and thence generally south west along the south east boundary of the Shire of Otway returning to the beginning point.

All of the islands defined as French Island and Quail Island located in Westernport Bay are also included in the Port Phillip Zone.

The area so enclosed includes all of the Shire of Bacchus Marsh, the Shire of Ballan, the Shire of Bannockburn, the Shire of Barrabool, the Shire of Bellarine, the Shire of Bulla, that part of the Shire of Buninyong lying within the Parish of Meredith (the "GEELONG VINE DISEASE DISTRICT"), and all of the Shire of Corio, the Shire of Cranbourne, the Shire of Daylesford and Glenlyon, the Shire of Diamond Valley, the Shire of Eltham, the Shire of Flinders, the Shire of Gisborne, the Shire of Hastings, the Shire of Healesville, the Shire of Kilmore, the Shire of Kyneton, the Shire of Leigh, the Shire of Lillydale, the Shire of Melton, the Shire of Mornington, the Shire of Newham and Woodend, the Shire of Pakenham, the Shire of Romsey, the Shire of Sherbrooke, the Shire of Upper Yarra, the Shire of Werribee, the Shire of Whittlesea, the Shire of Winchelsea, and that part of the Shire of Otway excluding the area to the west of the boundary defined by that part of the road linking Barwon Downs through the towns of Forrest, Barramunga and Tanybryn to its point of intersection with the Great Ocean road, and thence due south from this point to the southern coastline of the State of Victoria as defined by the Southern Ocean.

The area so described also includes all of the City of Altona, the City of Berwick, the City of Brighton, the City of Box Hill, the City of Broadmeadows, the City of Brunswick, the City of Camberwell, the City of Caufield, the City of Chelsea, the City of Coburg, the City of Collingwood, the City of Croydon, the City of Dandenong, the City of Doncaster and Templestowe, the City of Essendon, the City of Fitzroy, the City of Footscray, the City of Frankston, the City of Geelong, the City of Geelong West, the City of Hawthorn, the City of Heidelberg, the City of Keilor, the City of Kew, the City of Knox, the City of Malvern, the City of Melbourne, the City of Moorabbin, the City of Mordialloc, the City of Newtown, the City of Northcote, the City of Nunawading, the City of Oakleigh, the City of Port Melbourne, the City of Prahran, the City of Preston, the Borough of Queenscliff, the City of Richmond, the City of Ringwood, the City of St Kilda, the City of Sandringham, the City of South Barwon, the City of South Melbourne, the City of Springvale, the City of Sunshine, the City of Waverley, and, the City of Williamstown.
