The Australian Geographical Indication "South Coast" was entered in the Register of Protected Names on 1 May 1996 in response to a direction received by the Registrar from the Presiding Member of the Geographical Indications Committee acting under Section 40Z of the WAC Act 1980.

GI textual description:

The Geographical Indication "South Coast" is located within the State of New South Wales, Australia.

The beginning point of the boundary is located at the intersection of the eastern coastline of Australia as formed by the Pacific Ocean, and the northern boundary of the City Council of Lake Macquarie, and thence proceeds generally south along the eastern coastline of Australia forming the eastern boundary of the City Council of Lake Macquarie, the Council of Pittwater, the City Council of Gosford, the Council of Warringah, the Council of Manly, to the North Head lighthouse located on the northern entrance to Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour), and thence along a straight line joining the location of the North Head Lighthouse to the location of the Hornsby Lighthouse located on South Head on the southern entrance to Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour) within the Council of Woollahra, and thence generally south along the eastern coastline of Australia as formed by the Pacific Ocean, forming the eastern boundary of the Council of Woollahra, the Council of Waverley, the City Council of Randwick to Cape Banks and thence along a straight line joining Cape Banks and Cape Solander at the entrance to Botany Bay, and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Council of Sutherland, the City Council of Wollongong, the Council of Shellharbour, the Council of Kiama, the City Council of Shoalhaven, including Jervis Bay, the Council of Eurobodalla, the Council of Bega Valley, to the intersection of this eastern boundary of the Council of Bega Valley with the Victoria/New South Wales border at Cape Howe, and thence in a generally north west direction along the Victoria / New South Wales border which forms the southern boundary of the Council of Bega Valley to the western boundary of the Council of Bega Valley, and thence in a generally northerly direction along the western boundary of the Council of Bega Valley to its intersection with the western boundary of the Council of Eurobodalla, and thence generally north along the western boundary of the Council of Eurobodalla to its intersection with the western boundary of the City Council of Shoalhaven, and thence generally north along the western boundary of the City Council of Shoalhaven to its intersection with the western boundary of the Council of Wingecarribee, and thence in a generally northern direction along the western boundary of the Council of Wingecarribee to its intersection with the western boundary of the Council of Wollondilly, and thence in a generally northerly direction along the western boundary of the Council of Wollondilly to its intersection with the western boundary of the City Council of Blue Mountains, and thence in a generally northerly direction along the western boundary of the City Council of Blue Mountains to its intersection with the western boundary of the Council of Hawkesbury, and thence in a generally northerly direction along the western boundary of the Council of Hawkesbury to its intersection with the south western boundary of the Council of Singleton, and thence in a generally west, thence north, thence north east direction along the western and north western boundaries of the Council of Singleton to the point where the northern boundary of the Parish of Medhurst leaves the boundary of the Council of Singleton (see map 9032-4-S) and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the Parish of Medhurst to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Parish of Palomorang and thence generally south east and thence north east along the northern boundary of the Parish of Palomorang (see map no. 9032-1-S) to the eastern boundary of the Parish of Palomorang, and thence generally south and thence south east to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Parish of Bulga (see map no. 9032-2-N) and thence generally south east along the northern boundary of the Parish of Bulga to its intersection with the boundary of the Parish of Burton and thence generally east and thence south along the boundary of the Parish of Burton to its intersection with the northern boundary of the City Council of Cessnock (see map. no 9032-2-S) and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the City Council of Cessnock to the point where the boundary of the Parish of Finchley leaves the boundary of the City Council of Cessnock (see map no. 9132-3-S), and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Parish of Finchley to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Parish of Burragurra, and thence generally east and thence generally south southeast along the northern and eastern boundaries of the Parish of Burragurra to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Council of Hawkesbury (see map no. 9131-4-N) and following the boundary of the Council of Hawkesbury in a generally easterly direction to its intersection with the northern boundary of the City Council of Gosford, and thence in a generally south easterly direction along the northern boundary of the City Council of Gosford to its intersection with the north western boundary of the Council of Wyong, and thence in a generally north easterly direction and thence briefly south east along the north western boundary of the Council of Wyong to its intersection with the western boundary of the City Council of Lake Macquarie, and thence north east along this boundary, thence generally east to the point where the northern boundary of the Council of Lake Macquarie meets the coast at the Pacific Ocean.

The area so enclosed includes all of the Council of Ashfield, Council of Auburn, the City Council of Bankstown, the Council of Baulkham Hills, the City Council of Blacktown, the Council of Bega Valley, the Council of Botany, the City Council of Blue Mountains, the Council of Burwood, the Council of Camden, the City Council of Campbelltown, the Council of Canterbury, the Council of Concord, the Council of Drummoyne, the Council of Eurobodella, the City Council of Fairfield, the City Council of Gosford, the Council of Hawkesbury, the City Council of Holroyd, the Council of Hornsby, the Council of Hunters Hill, the City Council of Hurstville, the Council of Kiama, the Council of Kogarah, the Council of Kur-ring-gai, the City Council of Lake Macquarie, the Council of Lane Cove, the Council of Leichhardt, the City Council of Liverpool, the Council of Manly, the Council of Marrickville, the Council of Mosman, the Council of North Sydney, the City Council of Parramatta, the City of Penrith, the Council of Pittwater, the City Council of Randwick, the Council of Rockdale, the City Council of Ryde, the City Council of Shoalhaven (including the Territory of Jervis Bay), the Council of Shellharbour, the City Council of South Sydney, the Council of Strathfield, the Council of Sutherland, the City Council of Sydney, the Council of Warringah, the Council of Waverley, the City Council of Willoughby, the Council of Wingecarribee, the Council of Woollahra, the Council of Wollondilly, the City Council of Wollongong, the Council of Wyong, and those parts of the Council of Singleton lying to the south and west of the boundary defining the escarpment of the Hunter Range, and those parts of the City Council of Cessnock lying to the south and west of the boundary defining the escarpment of the Hunter Range.
