The Australian Geographical Indication "Western Victoria" was entered in the Register of Protected Names on 1 May 1996 in response to a direction received by the Registrar from the Presiding Member of the Geographical Indications Committee acting under Section 40Z of the Wine Australia Corporation Act 1980.

The Geographical Indication "Western Victoria" is located within the State of Victoria, Australia.

The beginning point of the boundary is located at the intersection of the Victoria / South Australia border and the road located in the Shire of Kowree which joins the township of Frances (in South Australia) and the City of Horsham (Victoria), and proceeds generally east along this road passing to the south of the Booropki Swamp and through the townships of Neuapur, Goroke and Gymbowen to the township of Natimuk and thence generally east along the Wimmera Highway to the western boundary of the City of Horsham, and thence generally north along the western boundary of the City of Horsham, and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the City of Horsham to its intersection with the road identified as the Wimmera Highway joining the townships of Horsham, Dooen and Murtoa, and thence in a generally north east direction along this road to the eastern boundary of the Shire of Wimmera, and thence in a generally south east direction along the eastern boundary of the Shire of Wimmera to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Shire of Stawell, and thence in a generally east and thence north east direction along the northern boundary of the Shire of Stawell to its intersection with the western boundary of the Shire of Kara Kara, and thence in a generally north direction along this western boundary of the Shire of Kara Kara, and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the Shire of Kara Kara to the eastern boundary of the Shire of Kara Kara and thence generally south-east along the eastern boundary of the Shire of Kara Kara to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Shire of Avoca, and thence generally east on the northern boundary of the Shire of Avoca and thence generally south on the eastern boundary of the Shire of Avoca to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Shire of Talbot and Clunes, and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the Shire of Talbot and Clunes and thence south along the eastern boundary of the Shire of Talbot and Clunes to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Shire of Creswick, and thence generally south-east along the eastern boundary of the Shire of Creswick to its intersection with the north eastern boundary of the Shire of Bungaree, and thence generally north-east and then generally south along the eastern boundary of the Shire of Bungaree to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Shire of Buninyong, and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Shire of Buninyong to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Parish of Meridith ("Geelong Vine Disease District" as described and proclaimed on Page 57 of the Victorian Government Gazette Number 3, dated 12th January,1881) and thence generally south, west and thence south along the northern boundary of the Parish of Meredith to its intersection with southern boundary of the Shire of Buninyong, and thence west along the southern boundary of the Shire of Buninyong to its intersection with eastern boundary of the Shire of Grenville, and thence generally south along this eastern boundary of the Shire of Grenville to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Shire of Hampden, and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Shire of Hampden to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Shire of Colac and thence east along the northern boundary of the Shire of Colac and thence south along the eastern boundary of the Shire of Colac to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Shire of Otway and thence along the northern boundary of the Shire of Otway to the intersection of this boundary with the road commencing at Barwon Downs and leading generally south through the towns of Forrest, Barramunga and Tanybryn to the point of intersection with the Great Ocean Road to the south-west of Skenes Creek, and thence due south to the coast approx. six kilometres to the north-east of the township of Apollo Bay, thence generally west along the southern coastline of the State of Victoria (as defined by the Southern Ocean) to its intersection with the Victoria / South Australia border and thence in a generally northerly direction along this border to the beginning point.The area so enclosed includes that part of the Shire of Arapiles lying to the south of the road joining and the township of Frances (South Australia) and the City of Horsham (Victoria) passing to the south of the Booropki Swamp and though the townships of Neuapur, Goroke and Gymbowen to the township of Natimuk and thence generally east along the Wimmera Highway to the western boundary of the City of Horsham, all of the Shire of Ararat, the Shire of Avoca, the Shire of Ballarat, the Shire of Belfast, the Shire of Bungaree, the Shire of Buninyong (excluding the area described as being within the Parish of Meridith ["Geelong Vine Disease District"]), the Shire of Colac, the Shire of Creswick, the Shire of Dundas, the Shire of Glenelg, the Shire of Grenville, the Shire of Hampden, the Shire of Heytesbury, the Shire of Heywood, the Shire of Kara Kara, and that part of the Shire of Kowree lying to the south of the road joining the township of Frances (in South Australia) and the City of Horsham (Victoria), passing to the south of the Booropki Swamp and though the townships of Neuapur, Goroke and Gymbowen to the township of Natimuk, and all of the Shire of Lexton, the Shire of Minhamite, the Shire of Mt Rouse, the Shire of Mortlake, and that part of the Shire of Otway excluding the area to the east of the boundary defined by that part of the road linking Barwon Downs through the towns of Forrest, Barramunga and Tanybryn to the point due south of its intersection with the Great Ocean road, and all of the Shire of Ripon, the Shire of Stawell, the Shire of Talbot and Clunes, the Shire of Wannon, the Shire of Warrnambool, and that western part of the Shire of Wimmera lying to the south of the road identified as the Wimmera Highway joining the township of Natimuk and the City of Horsham and that eastern part of the Shire of Wimmera lying to the south of the road identified as the Wimmera Highway joining the City of Horsham with the townships of Dooen and Murtoa.The area so described also includes the City of Ararat, the City of Ballarat, the Town of Camperdown, the City of Colac, the City of Hamilton, the City of Horsham, the Borough of Koroit, the Borough of Port Fairy, the Town of Portland, the Borough of Sebastopol, the Town of St Arnaud, the City of Stawell, the City of Warrnambool.
