About the report
This report provides an overview of the latest data on the Australian off-premise liquor market. The data includes volume and value for the key liquor categories: beer, wine, cider and spirits, as well as ready-to-drink (RTD) and ready-to-serve (RTS) categories.
The report breaks each liquor category down by state markets and into product categories – in the case of wine, sales are broken down by bottled wine (red and white), sparkling, cask (red and white) and fortified.
This report is prepared by IRI (formerly Information Resources Inc.) and purchased by Wine Australia on behalf of Australian wine sector levy payers.
The IRi Liquor Outlook report is structured into seven sections:
- Total liquor
- Beer category
- Wine category
- Spirits category
- RTD category
- RTS category and,
- Cider category.
Each category has an identical structure. Value and volume of liquor sold in the off-premise market in Australia for the 12-month period identified is presented, as well as the change in each from the previous equivalent 12-month period. Figures are given:
- for the total market
- by state, and
- by product type (varies for each liquor category) – annual and quarterly breakdown.
The most recent IRI Liquor Outlook report (February 2017) shows that:
- wine accounted for 20 per cent of the volume and 26 per cent of the value of the domestic off-premise liquor market and,
- the wine segment grew by 4 per cent in value and 2 per cent in volume in the year ended 5/2/17, with red bottled wine driving growth.
