Elephant Weevil impact and control in vineyards – Stage 2: Grape grower education about Elephant Weevil (Orthorhinus cylindrirostris) in vineyards
Abstract
A booklet and poster to assist identification and control of elephant weevil were prepared for grape growers in the Langhorne Creek region.
Summary
Elephant weevil has been a significant pest in the region, reducing yields by up to 15% in some vineyards. Levels of infestation have not been consistent and many growers had not gained skills in recognising early signs of damage and potential risks to vineyard profits at the time this project was mooted..
The outcomes have been heightened awareness of elephant weevil as an important pest through the display of posters in vineyard offices, and faster recognition of the pest aided by a guide that fits in the glovebox to describe the life cycle of the insect and illustrate damage caused by the pest.
