Irrigation strategies for improving water use efficiency

Abstract

Having been involved in research into partial rootzone drying (PRD) and other irrigation techniques, Shannon Pudney was able to extend her knowledge through travel funding. It took her to California where she met other researchers and visited irrigation regions where various techniques are being applied.

Summary

The primary purpose of the study tour was to attend and present at the International Symposium on Irrigation of Horticultural Crops. Meetings were held with key personnel from California State University (Department of Viticulture and Oenology) and the University of California (Kearney Agricultural Centre). Precision irrigation, plant-based measurements and mulching were among topics discussed.

A deeper insight into Californian practices resulted and personal networks were developed.

Researchers and grape growers are looking for ways of further improving irrigation and the experience has helped clarify matters of greatest importance, such as the fact that it is the volume of water applied (as opposed to root zone area targeted) that largely determines vine response.
