Abstract
This report describes the research and communication activities of a jointly-funded Wine Australia and Phylloxera and Grape Industry Board of South Australia travel scholarship to Europe to attend the Fifth International Grapevine Phylloxera Symposium held jointly with the 30th International ESN Symposium at the University of Vienna, Austria from 19th-23rd September 2010.
Summary
This report describes the research and communication activities of a Wine Australia and Phylloxera and Grape Industry Board of South Australia co-funded travel scholarship to Europe to attend the Fifth International Grapevine Phylloxera Symposium and two related discussion workshops hosted by University of Vienna focused on (i) Phylloxera Quarantine and (ii) Phylloxera Genome Sequencing.
The period covered (including travel) was 17th-26th September 2010. The attendance and presentations at the symposia by Dr Powell and related research meetings have resulted in an increased scientific knowledge of grapevine phylloxera, which are being communicated to the international scientific community through the publication of a special edition of the peer reviewed publication Acta Horticulturae. The knowledge acquired, and networking gained, will improve phylloxera research activities in Australia through the development of new collaborative research activities particularly with the European research groups, based at the University of Vienna and INRA Bordeaux, France and also University of Shandong, China. Ultimately leading to the development of improved phylloxera management practices on an international scale. At the symposia Dr Powell, who was also a member of the symposium scientific advisory committee, gave three oral presentations, three poster presentations and also chaired a session on Pest Management Strategies in Viticulture against Soil-borne Pests. A brief report on the workshop will be submitted in 2011 to a viticulture industry journal and in addition, six refereed scientific papers were submitted in December 2010 for publication in a special edition of Acta Horticulturae in June 2011. The symposia highlighted the latest research outputs from within Australia and overseas, and in particular the USA, Europe and China.
