Travel to 2010 International Cool Climate Symposium

Abstract

Fiona Kerslake attended the 7th International Cool Climate Symposium (ICCS) and the 61st American Society for Enology and Viticulture (ASEV) Annual Meeting to present final results arising from her PhD studies.

Summary

Fiona Kerslake attended the 7th ICCS and 61st ASEV Annual Meeting in Seattle in June 2010. A paper was selected by the ICCS organising committee to be presented orally during the viticulture session entitled ‘Canopy management – Beyond fruit exposure’. The presentation, ‘Effect of Vineyard Management Practices, such as Winter Pruning, Cluster Thinning, Leaf Removal, and Shoot Trimming on Cool Climate Pinot Noir Wines’ was a summary of final results from PhD studies, which were part funded by the GWRDC. A major outcome reported was the overwhelming influence of seasonal weather conditions on Pinot Noir fruit and wine composition. Although vineyard management practices of pruning levels, bunch thinning, leaf removal and shoot trimming were manipulated, the effect of the weather within each season overrode the influence of the practices investigated.

The bid from Tasmania to host the 8th ICCS in Hobart in 2012 was successful. The team of TIAR, Wine Industry Tasmania and Tourism Tasmania representatives and the technical presentation, along with Dr Richard Smart’s, helped convince the current organising committee that Tasmania was a suitable venue.
