Scoping study: Identify research priorities to improve the ability of horticulturalists to manage rootzones for desired outcomes

Abstract

This study focussed on research and extension needed to reduce root-zone soilconstraints in horticultural operations. We evaluated the scientific literature and ran eight workshops to identify constraints as perceived by >100 growers, advisers, and researchers. We concluded many problems require technology-transfer to apply what is already known, however we know little or nothing about several root-zone constraints.

Ideas for research & extension were prioritised in terms of their likely success in the short- & long-term. The literature review (for scientists), brochures on best practice (for growers and advisers), and some articles for the rural press, will appear during 2003.
