Attendees at this year's Exporter Update on Thursday 9 November received an in-depth look at Australia's top wine export markets by value - China and the United States (USA).

Wine exports and tourism have been a hot topic of conversation in the Australian wine community, with more than 200 new and existing wine exporters travelling to Adelaide to hear the latest market insights, trends and opinions from Australia's key export markets at Wine Australia's annual Exporter Update.

Jennifer Pagano, Director of Research at Wine Opinions, discusses Australian wine from the US consumer and trade perspective. Jennifer has over twenty years’ experience conducting qualitative and quantitative research for food and wine companies. Jennifer is also the Director of Research for Wine Market Council. She holds a public policy degree from Stanford University.

Josh Raynolds, Editor, Vinous

Josh’s interest in wine was kindled in the early 1980s while he was at Boston University, pursuing an English degree that he received in 1985. The crash of 1987 put a merciful end to a short-lived stint in the financial world and he decided to make the plunge into the wine trade, beginning in retail in Washington, D.C. and spending the better part of 1989 and 1990 visiting and working in vineyards and cellars in France and Germany. In 1993 he moved to New York to work for a national importer, traveling across the country to represent the portfolio until 2005, when Steve Tanzer asked him to join the International Wine Cellar. Over the last decade Josh has been a regular participant, speaker and judge at wine conferences around the country and contributed articles to Wine & Spirits magazine when there’s time to break away from attending to visiting the wine regions that he covers and trying to keep up with his tasting schedule.

Lisa Perotti-Brown MW, Editor-in-Chief, Wine Advocate

Born and raised in rural Maine, USA, Lisa graduated from Colby College with a degree in English Literature and Performing Arts. Her wine career began by accident when, living as a struggling playwright in London after college, she stumbled into a job as the manager of a wine bar. She progressed through wine sales and marketing roles in the UK wine trade throughout the 90s and early noughties before moving to Tokyo in 2002 where she worked as a wine buyer for one of Japan's top fine wine importers and a wine educator at Tokyo's Academie du Vin. In 2008 Lisa began writing a column for Robert Parker’s website, eRobertParker.com, and later that year she achieved her Master of Wine qualification and the Madame Bollinger Medal for excellence in wine tasting. Now living in California, she is the Editor in Chief for Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and eRobertParker.com and remains the publication’s critic for the wines of Australia and New Zealand.

Jennifer Pagano, Director of Research, Wine Opinions

Jennifer Pagano is the Director of Research at Wine Opinions, a wine industry consultancy and has over twenty years’ experience conducting qualitative and quantitative research for food and wine companies.  In addition, she is the Director of Research at Wine Market Council, a non-profit trade association.  She was the Director of Programs for the American Institute of Wine & Food before holding research positions at Merrill Research & Associates and the B/R/S group.   She attended Peter Kump’s New York Cooking School and holds an undergraduate degree in Public Policy from Stanford University.  Currently she is working toward her masters degree in Food Studies at the University of the Pacific.

Phin Ziebell, Agribusiness Economist, National Australia Bank.

Phin is NAB's Agribusiness Economist. He is responsible for analysing and reporting on the trends and developments in the agribusiness industry and works closely in conjunction with bankers in NAB’s Agribusiness division. He was previously an economist at the Victorian Department of Primary Industries and Victorian Treasury.

Andrew McEvoy, Founder – We Connect China

Andrew McEvoy has had more than 20 years’ experience in the tourism, media, and marketing sectors. He is a former Managing Director of Tourism Australia, and was CEO of the South Australian Tourism Commission. Andrew authored the Tourism 2020 Plan with the 10 year aim of doubling the value of Australia's tourism industry. Andrew also spent more than three years running the Fairfax Media lifestyle publishing division and built Fairfax Events into Australia's largest consumer event company. He is Chairman of listed travel and tourism company Sealink, Chairman of the Adelaide Riverbank Authority, a Board Director of the Lux Group (owner of Luxury Escapes) and an investor in various technology start-ups. Most recently, Andrew founded a company helping Australian business achieve practical results in China (We Connect China) and is now collaborating with Monika Tu as Executive Chairman of Black Diamondz Marketing.

Monika Tu, Founder and Director - Black Diamondz Group International

Monika Tu, Founder and Director of Black Diamondz Group International is the Chinese entrepreneur at the forefront of a revolution in the Australian luxury landscape. Black Diamondz Group International includes Black Diamondz Property Concierge; specializing in turn key solutions and prestige property sales, Black Diamondz Recruitment Concierge; with a focus on bilingual HR and recruitment placements and Black Diamondz PR and Marketing offering western creative communication strategies with eastern insights. In addition to Black Diamondz, Ms Tu the sits on the advisory board of Laser Corporation, an Australian owned IT and electronics solution provider that she established in 1987 and grew to a multinational with offices in New Zealand, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Sydney.

Monika’s influence and insight has made her the go-to for international media including BBC World News, China Central, Bloomberg and Wall Street Journal seeking an expert opinion on where the ultra-high net worth Chinese will be spending next.

Owen Malone, Proprietor - Malong IPI Consultancy

Owen Malone has more than 40 years’ experience in working in intellectual property (IP)in both government and industry, the latter including 19 years in the wine industry.

Owen commenced his career as a Patent Examiner at IP Australia and then obtained the position of IP manager at Telstra’s Research Laboratory.  From 1989-95, Owen held the position of General Manager, Intellectual Property in Telstra Corporation, with overall responsibility for the company’s intellectual property policy, management and practices.  He then joined Freehills law firm as Executive Director, Freehills Technology Services Pty Ltd, a company established to provide intellectual property commercialisation and consultancy services.  In 1998, Owen moved to the Foster’s Group to take up the position of Intellectual Property Director with responsibility for the Group’s intellectual property globally.  In May 2011, with the demerger of Foster’s wine business, Owen was appointed to the position of global Director Intellectual Property for Treasury Wine Estates Limited and served the company in this role for 6 years.

Owen retired from Treasury Wine Estates at the end of March 2017, and has created a consultancy business, named Malong IPI.  The business is focussed on the management of intellectual property (IP assets) and optimisation of business outcomes through the most effective utilisation of these intangible assets.  The primary objective is to align and utilise intellectual property assets and innovations to extract maximum value and optimal outcomes for the major strategic imperatives of clients’ businesses.

Peter Switzer, Business & Finance Commentator

Peter is one of Australia’s leading business and financial commentators, launching his own business 20 years ago. The Switzer Group has since grown into three successful companies spanning media and publishing, financial services and business coaching.

Peter is an award-winning broadcaster, twice runner-up for the Best Current Affairs Commentator award for radio, behind broadcaster Alan Jones.
