Abstract
The purpose of the travel was to allow attendance and participation in the 13th International Congress on Yeats (ICY), held in Madison Wisconsin, USA from August 26 to 30, 2012. The meeting provided opportunities to meet with several researchers working in relevant areas of yeast research.
Summary
Professor Jiranek travelled to Madison to attend the entire ICY meeting including participation in the poster/oral session, with some 350 delegates, many from outside the USA. The meeting consisted of one keynote, 6 plenary and some 52 sessions (many concurrent) spanning a diverse array of topics. Discussions were held with at least 30 yeast researchers on topics related to the activities of the Jiranek group, new technologies and approaches, potential research collaborations, research exchanges and funding opportunities. Through the above it was possible to:
1) confirm an extended sabbatical visit to the Jiranek Lab by a distinguished yeast researcher for later 2013,
2) secure a 1 month visit to UC Davis for a current PhD student to learn skills in population sequencing techniques, and
3) initiate 2 new research collaborations/preliminary funding applications with researchers from Australia.
