Presentation and attendance at the 21st GiESCO International Meeting, Greece, June 23-28, 2019

Abstract

The Wine Australia Travel Bursary provided assistance for Alice Betteridge travel to the 21st International Meeting of Viticulture GiESCO. Alice presented a poster titled “What practices in the vineyard lead to the production of wines that consistently win medals?” This meeting provided Alice with an opportunity to meet researchers from all over the world working within the same field as well as enhance her current knowledge of Viticulture research. Site visits enabled a close-up view and discussion on various viticultural practices which may lead to better quality wine. It was also a terrific opportunity to gather international opinion and feedback on the directions of her current research.

Summary

The 21st International Meeting of Viticulture (GiESCO) was held form 23-28 June in Thessaloniki, Greece. There were 82 speakers, 150 posters and about 250 participants.

GiESCO is a unique meeting in that is has a strong focus on applied research and industry visits and these technical visits to vineyards and wineries around Greece were a highlight of the meeting. The presentations focused on climate change, vine physiology, viticultural techniques, and soil
