Women in wine update study

Summary

Objective

Wine Australia is undertaking a scoping study to identify existing resources, gaps and opportunities to help the Australian grape and wine sector implement and demonstrate equity and inclusion outcomes, starting with an evidence-based understanding across the gender equality landscape and maturity within the sector.

Background

The data on women in leadership roles in the Australian grape and wine sector for the years 2007-2013 was first published in Galbreath, J. 2015. A study of women in top business roles: the case of the wine industry. International Journal of Wine Business Research. 27 (2): pp. 143-158. A part of the project will be to update this data for the years 2021-2023.

Research approach

This will involve:

  • The development of a database for manual coding of women in top coding roles including CEO, winemaker, viticulturist and marketing manager/director. Coding will be undertaken for each year, 2021-2023 and each company (approximately 2,100 per year), and will include several other fields such as location, company age, company size and export status. Data to be taken from Winetitles Australian and New Zealand Wine Industry Development for the years 2021-2023. Database setup, entry and cleansing of all data in SPSS.
  • Statistical analysis comparing women in top business roles from 2007-2013 to 2021-2023.
  •  Development and finalisation of a report to elucidate findings.
